Tea Bags

This collection displays the versatility of tea bags. Processes including dyeing, weaving, Batik and embroidery have been used. In some of the pieces, the tea bags have been glued, or sewn together to create a fabric for further processing, or worked on individually to create a type of patchwork design. The tea stains are part of each piece as the uneven absorption results in interesting patterns, rich tones and shades when dye, or paint is added. Look closely, as grains of tea are still visible on some of the works.

Rolled tea bags, dye and embroidery

This work was inspired by a vase of lilies. The flowers had not fully opened and buds were still draped, elegantly into curves. The image was created by rolling tea bags into a thick thread and sewing them onto the background. Further thin layers of tea bags were added and embroidered with gold thread to represent reflections of sunlight on the flowers and crystal vase.

Earth Rhythms

Rolled tea bag strips woven and embroidered

This piece was inspired by natural forms in the forest. The tea bag strips were rolled into 'yarn' which was then woven into a fabric on a simple home-made cardboard loom. The repeat pattern was sewn onto the weaving with more dyed, rolled strips.
